We would like to acknowledge the following contributors to this month's STAE issue.

The Sterling Creations accessibility team, Jeff N Marquis and Kerry J Harrison who are our resident business consultants, Scott Savoy our managing editor, Christian Robicheau our assistant editor, and Donna J Jodhan our president.

We are especially delighted to have both Jeff N Marquis and Kerry J Harrison as part of our magazine staff and as our resident business experts because of their in depth knowledge and expertise as special needs business consultants.  Both Jeff and Kerry have written many articles and they released their last hot selling book called "Untapped Wealth Discovered."  This book was released in mid August 2005 and it has already begun to fulfill promises of being dynamite, explosive, and seismic and we are very sure that many of you will find it extremely valuable, useful and informative.  Both the U.S and British governments have already given their blessing to this book and several business experts have also jumped on the band wagon.  Marquis and Harrison are off to a flying start.

We believe in this book because it is unique in that it can help you to get back on your feet if you suddenly find yourself without a job, if you are looking for ways to put money away for your kids' education, or if you need extra income to help you live more comfortably.  The beauty about this book is that it is based solely on realities and logic and not on those fool hardy get rich quick schemes and false and empty promises.

Here are just a few quotes from some U.S government officials and experts to peak your interest.

"Block buster material.  This book has the potential to change the way we reduce our costs, increase our revenues, expand our customer base, and stay ahead of our competition."

"If you are looking for safe ways to protect the future of you and your kids then you should pick up a copy of Untapped Wealth Discovered."

"Marquis and Harrison have affectively provided their readers with logical and common sense ways to generate and create business ideas that will work because they are based on markets that exist.  Moreover these markets are going to be around for a very long time to come."

"This book is meant to help the little guy.  It's a book for almost everyone.  The woman, the entrepreneur, the small business owner, and even the retiree and the college student."

"If you want to avoid those get rich quick schemes and keep your money safe then Untapped Wealth Discovered is an absolute must read for you."

Here is what some readers have to say about "Untapped Wealth Discovered."

From Kelly Strasberg vice president of a mid sized computer company in San Francisco:

"As a woman I am really impressed to see that these authors truly understand our plight in the business world. They acknowledge that there is indeed a glass ceiling for women and they show us how to deal with it in a positive way."

From Mark Gregory a foreman who unexpectedly lost his job at a GM plant in Michigan in 2005:

"It's so hard to know what to do when you suddenly find yourself without a job but this book has helped me to deal with things and turn my life around in a very quick time. I'm back on

my feet and making very good money.  Enough to be the bread winner once more."

From Rick Stone a small business owner in Washington DC:

"This is the first book that I've come across where the authors don't even mention a single thing about getting rich quickly.  Instead, they talk about ways to take advantage of niche markets, lucrative opportunities, and rising demand."

From Melissa Goldatt a stay at home mom in Baltimore Maryland:

"I like this book because it presents fresh new approaches to creating your own employment.  It also helps you to evaluate yourself and that's important to me  because I am seriously thinking of getting into some kind of business to earn some extra income to help out around the house and I don't want to do something new without first examining all of my options."

From Chris Farrell a retired banker in New York:

"I wasn't sure what I would be reading when I bought a copy of this book but I'm sure glad that I did.  If anyone is seriously looking to develop a business then this is the book for you.  Marquis and Harrison have truly captured the essence of some very important trends and they talk about using these trends to build safe and sound businesses.  Something that most of my colleagues should be thinking of before they retire."

From Laura Peterson a professor in business studies in London England:

"I'm glad to see that someone is finally paying attention to women in the business world.  After reading this book I am convinced that women can have more than a better chance of being successful in their own businesses."

From Pierre LaPage a recent graduate in Montreal Canada:

"I was just browsing Amazon when I came across "Untapped Wealth Discovered" and the cover looked interesting enough so I bought it because it did not cost too much.  It's cool!  It has some very interesting techniques.  It does not BS you into false hope and the authors don't try to fool you with big terms and cute phrases.  No smoke screens here."

The second edition of "Untapped Wealth Discovered" was released on April 28 and the excitement is already building at break neck speed as these two authors have already been booked solid for the next year in promotional appearances across North America, Britain, and Europe.

The second edition comes as a result of tremendous demand from both readers and clients as well as from the American, British, and Canadian governments.  The first edition sold over 50,000 copies in just six months and the experts are openly predicting that the second edition will probably sell well over a quarter million copies within the first year.

Mr. Marquis is a motivational speaker and a highly paid consultant to both the U.S and British governments.  He has over 20 years of special needs business consulting and is absolutely delighted to be co-authoring "Untapped Wealth Discovered" with Ms Harrison.  His time is filled with speaking engagements, consulting, and traveling around the world to help set up new ventures.

Ms Harrison also has over 20 years in the special needs business-consulting field and her expertise is constantly in demand and among other things she works as a consultant to the U.S government, she is a motivational speaker, and she finds time to work on other projects for large corporate clients, small businesses, and even entrepreneurs.

These two are indeed an unbeatable combination and if you'd like them to help you keep up to date with up to the minute news then you should visit www.untappedwealth.com and check out the business desk.  There you will find daily postings by Jeff, Kerry, and their fellow consultants and you can view all of this at no charge.

If you are looking for easy ways to keep abreast with news flashes, news from off the wires, and important developments and trends in the business world then the business desk is definitely for you.

To pick up a copy of "Untapped Wealth Discovered" visit www.untappedwealth.com/order.htm.

We would like to note here that as of July 31 2006 the second edition of Untapped Wealth Discovered has sold over 35000 copies and according to the experts this is well on track to break all records for new authors.  The experts are boldly predicting that this book will sell close to 200000 copies within the first year.

An accessible bingo hall in Scotland

August 2006

By the Sterling Creations accessibility team

Hello there!  This month we would like to publish an article that was sent to us by Mrs. Jane Lipert of Scotland.  We decided to publish it because of the growing interest in making social activities more accessible to the blind and visually impaired.  We hope you find it informative.

Thank you Mrs. Lipert.

Scottish Bingo Hall Installs Bingo Machines for Visually Impaired Players

Dot-bingo.com (UK), April 17, 2006

A bingo hall in Dundee, Scotland, recently installed new bingo machines,

which enable visually impaired individuals to play the game. Gala Bingo

officials were reported as saying that the new machines have proven to be

popular, not only among people with sight impairments, but also among the

venue's regular customers.

One of the main reasons for such popularity is the fact that the new bingo

machines make it much easier for players to deal with several cards at the

same time. Alistair Tares, Gala Bingo's general manager, reportedly said

that the newly-installed machines were developed, not only for people with

vision problems, but also for customers with flawless vision.

The Electronic Dabber (Ted) machines help players keep track of the game.

During a game, the machines have called numbers "beamed" to them. Players

must press a button after each time a number is called and if it is on their

bingo card, it is automatically registered. Tares also said that it was nice

to see that gaming technology helps players with limited vision enjoy the

game.

Accessible cell phones

August 2006

By the technology team

Hey there!  We don't always make it to the STAE magazine every month but this month we have because we found a very interesting article and we feel that it may be of interest to many blind and visually impaired persons.  With more and more people using phones for so many different reasons, it is clear that blind and visually impaired persons are quite wanting when it comes to finding cell phones that contain accessibility features.  It's why we chose this article and we hope that you find it of some value.

Accessible Cell Phones for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired

By Michael McCarty

The Fred's Head Companion, April 19, 2006

It seems that cell phones keep getting more and more complicated. You can

browse the Internet, take pictures, chat and check your email with your cell

phone. Unfortunately accessibility hasn't improved with the phones.

Some companies have figured out that blind people do use cell phones and we

want to use the same features as our sighted counterparts. Before I give you

a list of some accessible cell phones, let me tell you about a very basic

phone and phone service.

Originally designed for elderly parents or grandparents to use as an

emergency phone, or for anyone who is technically challenged Jitterbug

LINK:

http://www.gojitterbug.com/

is a MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) that uses the Sprint system and

features easy-to-use phones with operator-assisted calling and speed dial

set-up.

Jitterbug currently features two phones made by Samsung.

LINK:

http://www.samsung.com/

Both have large, easy-to-read displays, loud and clear sound, and feature

large, easy to dial buttons with clear markings (no confusing icons). They

also "play" a familiar dial tone when the phone is opened to simulate a

landline. One phone has a standard keypad, the other has three one-touch

dial keys.

The ease of use makes these phones a great option for people who are blind

or visually impaired. A perfect peace of mind without 37 ringer choices and

streaming TV.

Accessible Cell Phones

Thanks to a special software, the Vodafone Speaking Phone reads and

describes the icons in the menu to the blind user. It is also capable of

reading text messages and allows users to compose and send their own

messages.

Vodafone's close collaboration with the Italian Association for the Blind on

the Vodafone Speaking Phone project included a trial phase, and the

subsequent distribution of the phones to as many blind people as possible.

Nokia N91

The Nokia N91 phone will probably be the one most attractive to people who

are blind or visually impaired, as it promises, when combined with the

screen reader or screen magnification software, a fully accessible handheld

mobile music experience. This device, combined with a screen reader or

screen magnifier and the DAISY book reading software from Code Factory could

serve many needs in one package. It could be a phone, notetaker, appointment

calendar, book reader, web browser, e-mail tool and a music player all in

one, eliminating the need to carry several devices at once.

The Nokia N91 features storage for up to 3000 songs, plus smartphone

functionality in an ultra-portable package. It is a device optimized for

mobile music consumption. With room for up to 3000 songs on the integrated

4-gigabyte hard disk, the Nokia N91 delivers a premier music experience. In

addition, the industry standard 3.5mm stereo headset jack and easy transfer

of music files from your PC help make the Nokia N91 a connected mobile

jukebox.

Encased in stainless steel, the Nokia N91 has dedicated music keys on its

face, which slide down to reveal the phone keypad. The Nokia N91 serves up

to 12.5 hours of sound via the included stereo headset. It supports a wide

range of digital music formats including MP3, M4A, AAC and WMA. The phone

The yoga business

August 2006

By Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison

Hello there!  We hope that you're enjoying your summer as we are and this month we'd like to zoom in on the yoga business.  According to the folks at www.marketwatch.com it is estimated that at the present time the yoga business is worth about 3 billion dollars.  You may be wondering why this is and the answer is not very hard to find.  More and more aging baby boomers are spending more and more money on such things as yoga apparel, yoga classes, and health and beauty spas and they are doing this in an effort to combat stress in the workplace, stay healthy, keep the bulge under control, and live a more happy and healthy life.

You see, more and more people are discovering that the yoga alternative holds many benefits for them and it's just not the baby boomers who are discovering this.  It's practically persons of all ages:  From the teenagers with the cells and mp3s stuck in their ears, to persons in their twenties hustling to climb the corporate ladder, to the busy professionals in their 30s and 40s, to the bustling housewives and stay at home moms, and even the seniors in their 60s and 70s.

Many health gurus are predicting that the yoga business is going to increase by more than 10fold within the next five years and because of this the demand for yoga professionals is going to increase at ballooning rates.  There is going to be a demand for persons who are skilled in such professions as:

Fitness instructors, yoga instructors, massage therapists, masseurs, health and beauty professionals, and other related professionals.  This is also going to drive up the demand for yoga apparel, the teaching of yoga classes, and spas and fitness centers.  Yoga is fast becoming a means to deal with stress in the workplace and it is also turning out to be one of the most economic and affective weapons against stress.  Several medical experts are also advocating the use of yoga to deal with and control such diseases as heart conditions, diabetes, obesity, and even cancer.  Yoga is fast becoming one of the most affective and fashionable ways of dealing with many of life's challenges but more than this yoga apparel is also fast becoming a trend for many persons.

So, if you're looking for new careers, new business horizons, or new business investments, then you may want to do some research into the yoga business.

Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Online shopping

August 2006

By Scott Savoy

Hello everyone!  This month I'd like to give you some tips on online shopping.  Online shopping is becoming more and more popular as more consumers are using the Internet to buy stuff.  It's really not very hard to see why this is so because online shopping is helping practically millions of customers who are just too busy to visit malls and large shopping centers to choose and pick up their merchandise.  It is o so easy to just go to the chosen website, click on the desired product, and enter the necessary info and there you have it.  All done and all you have to do is to wait for your purchases to be delivered to you.  Nice and easy you say?  True but there are a few things that you should be aware of before you buy anything on the Internet and I'd like to give these to you.

First, pay close attention to the disclaimer and privacy policies on the website that you wish to purchase from.  Almost every reputable website has a disclaimer and privacy policy and these two things are important when purchasing stuff.  A disclaimer will tell you what the website is responsible for and what it's not responsible for.  A disclaimer will tell you what damages the website will cover especially so during shipping.  A privacy policy will tell you how private and confidential it is going to keep your info.  Very important when it comes to whether or not this website is going to either share or not share your personal details such as your name and address and what you have purchased.

Second, Make sure that your personal info is not given out by the website owners to other sources.  Very important if you don't want to be disturbed by all kinds of inconvenient phone calls and unwanted emails.

Third, make sure that you understand what types of damages these websites would cover during shipping.  Most websites do not cover damages if your product is damaged during shipping.  Very important for you to know and you don't want to discover too late that they won't cover damaged goods during the shipping stage.

Fourth, make sure that you understand all of the guarantees and warrantees.  Most websites will not guarantee that the product you have purchased will work and will do what it's supposed to do.  This means that the website will only ship your product and if the product does not work then you will need to go directly back to the manufacturer.  This could be a hassle for you if you are not prepared for this.  The same goes for warrantees.

Fifth, Most websites do not deal with defective products nor do they deal with products that do not last as long as they are supposed to.  Please check these things out before you make a purchase because like the point above you could easily find yourself in a bind if you suddenly discover that you need to go back to the manufacturer if anything goes wrong because the website that you purchased from is only a shipper.

The most popular purchases include:  Computers, software, electronics, books, and toys.

In summary:  Before you make a purchase through the Internet, make sure that you fully understand the disclaimer and privacy policies.  Be sure to get a full explanation of what's covered and what's not.  Get a full explanation of guarantees and warrantees.  Online shopping can be a very enjoyable experience but can also turn into a nightmare if you're not fully aware of all of the ins and outs.

Siblings of the disabled have their own problems

August 2006

Sponsored by Donna J Jodhan

Happy summer to you all!  This month I have decided to share an article with you that I found while browsing the Internet.  This article touched me greatly as it pertains to children and how they cope when they have disabled siblings.

Siblings of Disabled Have Their Own Troubles

By GRETCHEN COOK

New York Times, April 4, 2006

When he was growing up in Oregon, Graham Seaton found it virtually

impossible to bring children home from school to play.

"I knew there was something wrong with my place," he recalled. "But I didn't

know how to explain what that was."

He knew that he would have to tell his friends why they could play only in

his bedroom - and only with the door locked. And that, ultimately, he would

have to explain what was "wrong" with his older brother Burleigh, who is

profoundly autistic.

"I just didn't have the words," he said.

Now 30, Mr. Seaton said he realized that as a child, he felt he could not

ask his parents for those words.

"I was so aware I couldn't make a big deal with my family," he said. "My

parents already had enough on their hands."

An estimated seven million "typically developing" American children have

siblings with disabilities, according to the Arc of the United States, a

leading advocacy group for the mentally retarded. Those children face many

of the same challenges - and joys - as their parents, but they also face

other problems.

Some resent the extra demands placed on them at an early age by their

disabled siblings, and many feel neglected by their often overburdened

parents.

Some children say they fear "catching" their siblings' disabilities. Others

may wish that they, too, were disabled, so that they could get all the

attention their siblings do. And many suffer embarrassment about their

siblings' inappropriate behavior or abnormal appearance, and then feel

guilty about it.

These are difficult emotions for children to struggle with, and Don Meyer,

director of the Arc's sibling support project, says the needs of siblings

like Mr. Seaton are often overlooked. Most assistance organizations and

support groups are intended for disabled children themselves or for their

parents.

"These brothers and sisters will likely have the longest-lasting

relationships of anyone, relationships easily in excess of 65 years," Mr.

Meyer said. "They should be remembered at every turn."

Still, many siblings welcome the early maturity and responsibility that come

with having a disabled brother or sister. They are often well versed in the

details of their siblings' disabilities, and they take pride in being able

to explain them in sophisticated ways. For example, Hannah, 16, of Dearborn,

Mich., who did not want her last name used out of concerns for her privacy,

said she related better to adults than to children her age because of having

to cope with her brother Ian's autism.

But that maturity does not inoculate her from embarrassment about Ian's

outbursts, particularly during church services.

"Sometimes he'll kind of start making noises, and then sometimes he'll kick

and flail his arms, or he'll start rocking and crying," Hannah said. "My

mother will take him outside, but it's still, like, okayyyyy. ..."

Suzanne Ripley, who has two sons with cerebral palsy, says that a child's

disability can embarrass parents, too, but that embarrassment can be more

acute for siblings, especially those in the throes of adolescent conformity.

Young siblings are also prone to teasing from other children, who do not

have the social inhibitions of adults.

But Ms. Ripley, the director of the National Dissemination Center for

Children With Disabilities, based in Washington, notes that adults can often

be just as rude.

"People tend to be uncomfortable with anyone who's different, so they look

for a second and then look away," Ms. Ripley said. "Imagine how that would

make you feel" as a child.

Parents like Ms. Ripley are likely to seek comfort through talking with

others about their conflicting emotions. But children may not have the

sophistication to do so or they may feel guilty about acknowledging any

negative feelings they have.

Hannah, for example, says she loves her 13-year-old brother and feels

terrible about her reactions to his outbursts.

"I know it's not his fault and that's the way he is, and so I shouldn't

really be embarrassed, but sometimes I am," she said.

But she said she did not discuss those feelings with her parents.

"They'd get that, 'Oh well, you can deal with it' kind of attitude," she

said. "I know they would listen, but they would get defensive."

Ally Cirelli, a 9-year-old in Towson, Md., whose sister is developmentally

disabled, says the biggest complaint she hears from her peers is that the

disabled siblings get all the attention.

Some are so jealous of their siblings that they wish they had their own

disability, and the special treatment that comes with it, she said. But

Ally, too, avoids talking to her parents about her feelings. And she is

quick to backpedal when she does talk about it, insisting that her sister,

Katie, 8, does not embarrass her "all that often," and that she is "really

fun" to play with.

Mr. Meyer, of the Arc, says children need a place where they can openly

discuss these concerns and emotions. To fill this gap, he started the

sibling support project, which is based in Seattle and provides information

and holds discussion groups for children around the country. In 2005, Mr.

Meyer also published "The Sibling Slam Book: What It's Really Like to Have a

Brother or Sister With Special Needs," a collection of candid remarks by 80

children.

Mr. Meyer said that when asked about the most embarrassing moment of their

lives, few of the children cited anything having to do with their disabled

siblings. Instead, most recounted the usual teenage humiliations: problems

in romantic relationships or dealing with parents.

And that, Mr. Meyer says, underscores an important point: "When I talk to

parents about embarrassment (about disabled siblings), I ask them to keep in

mind that it's an age-related condition," he said. "That's the good news,

that a lot of that seems to be resolved by even their late teens."

The work of disability advocates and the mainstreaming of children with

special needs in schools and in the wider society has fostered more

awareness of - and less discomfort with - disabilities.

Ms. Ripley, for her part, says she has noticed a change in public attitudes,

especially when she is struggling to maneuver with her sons in public

places.

"I'm finding that people are more and more helpful," she said. "That didn't

used to happen."

Stress factors in the workplace

August 2006

By Christian Robicheau

Hello!  I hope that you are enjoying a very warm and pleasant summer and that work is going fine for you.  This month I'd like to focus in on something that I came across at www.careerbuilder.com.  I found this about three months ago and it's only now that I've had a spot to squeeze it in.  I don't mean to spoil those warm and sunny days but I feel that it's important enough for you to know.

This survey revealed that about 50% of Americans feel stressed out and about 70% of Americans feel burned out.  This should not come as a total surprise to anyone because we all know how much stress has grown in the workplace over the past few years.  However, I think that many of you would be surprised when I disclose some of the facts that were revealed in this survey.  According to those surveyed, the three leading stress factors that were identified included co-workers, workload, and an interfering boss.  Believe it or not many people feel that their very own co-workers play a very big part in stressing them out and this comes as a result of co-workers doing things that either ignore and/or frustrate each other.

With regard to workload, it may be easier to understand this factor as a very heavy workload could stress out a person in so many ways.  IE not enough time to do other things, too many hours spent at work, not enough time to spend with the family or be at home, too many tasks to accomplish in too little time, not enough hours in the day, not enough time for sleep and relaxation, plus more.

In the case of an interfering boss this too can be understandable as most of us really do not appreciate a boss hanging over our shoulder or a boss constantly telling us how to do our job, or a boss telling us that we're not doing our job correctly.  An interfering boss can certainly make us feel anxious and frustrated and this can easily lead to stress.

Of course, there are so many other factors that can lead to stress in the workplace and some of these would include:

A cramped cubicle, not enough lighting, bullying, uncertainty re keeping one's job, the future of a project, and even things like pay cuts and loss of benefits.
